'PBS NewsHour' delves into Kushner controversy in Jersey City

EB-5 Visa, EB5 Visa, EB-5 Investment

"PBS NewsHour'' took viewers on a tour of Jersey City last night with the help of Jersey Journal reporter Terrence McDonald as it looked into the continuing controversy of the Kushner Companies' use of a visa program to get foreign financing for several developments.

The program focused on the Trump Bay Street high-rise in Downtown Jersey City and the way its developers strung together Census tracts from the inner city in order to have foreign investors qualify for EB-5 visas for $500,000 investments.

In the segment, McDonald takes "NewsHour'' economics correspondent Paul Solman on a walking tour of the tracts and also Journal Square, where a Kushner entity is planning a two-tower development called One Journal Square. That project raised eyebrows last month when Jared Kushner's sister used his name in a pitch to Chinese investors.

Kushner Companies, which is developing One Journal Square with KABR Group, withdrew its request for a tax abatement deal from the city. Mayor Steve Fulop said last month his administration would not support the request.
