Houston is ranked fifth in the U.S. for most hotel product under construction.
According to JLL's 2019 Construction Outlook Report, the Bayou City has 4,576 rooms underway — 3% of the national pipeline. Meanwhile, industry experts warn of market oversaturation.
At least 12 hotels are under construction in the Greater Houston area, according to data compiled by NAI Partners Houston. The data also calculated 20 proposed hotels, including Maison Roberts at 346 West 20th St., Thompson Houston at 1701 Allen Parkway, The Montrose Hotel at 2509 Dunlavy St. and a Holiday Inn Express at League City Parkway and Gulf Freeway.
Bisnow looked at five of the most interesting hotels underway.
1. Blossom Hotel Medical Center
Blossom Hotel Medical Center hopes to serve as a medical bridge between China and the United States.
In response to a growing need of Chinese citizens seeking specialized medical treatment in the U.S., the hotel will help facilitate requests such as language translation, appointment scheduling, and travel and transportation assistance, manager Ken Yeh said.
This is the brand's first U.S.-based hotel. It has eight locations in Hangzhou, China. Situated at 7118 Bertner Ave., the 276-unit hotel features single- and double-occupancy rooms. On-site amenities include a gym, an office, a conference room, an outdoor pool and a garden. The 16-story hotel is slated to open in the summer of 2020.
Grand View Construction is the general contractor, and Zhejiang Blossom Tourism Group LLC is the investor.
2. Hyatt Houston Metropark Shenandoah/The Woodlands

Sam Moon Group began construction of a Hyatt House extended-stay hotel at Metropark Square, an upscale mixed-use development in Shenandoah. The five-story, 148-room hotel is slated to open in November 2020.
Hyatt House Metropark will feature studios, one- and two- bedroom suites with fully equipped kitchens and separate living guest rooms.
On-site amenities include indoor and outdoor social spaces, an H BAR with craft cocktails and freshly prepared meals, a lounge and several multipurpose areas.
Metropark Square recently opened a new 10-screen AMC movie theater and future plans include a Dave & Buster’s, a central green space area, residential housing, restaurants and retail.
VCC is the contractor for the hotel, while Type Six is the architect. The senior lender is Veritex Community Bank and Bedrock Group raised EB-5 funds for the construction.
3. Holiday Inn Express/Staybridge Suites
American Liberty Hospitality is underway on a dual-branded Holiday Inn Express/Staybridge Suites in the Galleria area. The hotel is at 2415 West Loop South, according to NAI Partners data.
The 14-story hotel features 319 guest rooms and a 110K SF parking garage, according to the Arch-Con website.
The 221K SF structure is amenitized with an outdoor second-level pool and patio deck, guest fitness center, guest laundry facilities, grab-and-go food areas, retail and conference space, per the website.
Arch-Con is the general contractor. Mitchell Carlson Stone Inc. is the architect.
4. Hyatt Place Hotel in Downtown Houston

Opening by early November, the Hyatt Place Hotel reimagines the 1950s-era Southwestern Bell building in Downtown Houston. The 150-key all-suite, select-service hotel is at 1114 Texas Ave. near the Magnolia Houston hotel and the 10-story Keystone Lofts.
The development team includes Anthony and Nick Patel of Pride Management, which will manage the property. The company operates hotels in Texas and Louisiana. Dallas-based HALL Structured Finance approved a $22.8M loan in November 2017 to finance the adaptive reuse project.
The 16-story hotel will feature a ground-level dining area, a top-floor bar, an indoor pool, a fitness center, WiFi and meeting space, according to Pride Management. The project team includes Excel Enterprise as the general contractor and Alecha Architecture of New Orleans.
5. Home2Suites in Richmond
Noble Merchant Properties is developing a Home2Suites at 5350 Pointe West Circle, Richmond. Situated on Interstate 69 and the Grand Parkway, the hotel is slated to open in August.
The pet-friendly, studio or one-bedroom suites are equipped with a full kitchen, workspace and free WiFi, according to the hotel's website.
The hotel also offers free hot breakfast every morning. On-site amenities include a pool, a fitness center and a laundry facility.
The property is walking distance to restaurants, grocery stores and Memorial Hermann Hospital.
