Pennsylvania Turnpike widening project outside Philadelphia moves forward

A project to widen the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Chester and Montgomery Counties is one step closer to reality.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection announced Friday it has approved the plan for miles 320-326.

The proposed work is part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Statewide Total Reconstruction Initiative, which consists of 52 projects that will widen the highway across the state.

This project will reconstruct the existing four-lane highway, widening the road to create room for two additional lanes for the section. Road crews will also need to replace two overhead bridges, seven mainline bridges, noise barriers, retaining walls, stormwater management facilities and storm pipe systems in the area.

The timeline for the project has yet to be determined.

Earlier this week, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission announced a six-percent toll increase to help fund rebuilding efforts.
