Lawmakers call for special prosecutor

A group of bipartisan South Dakota lawmakers is sponsoring a resolution calling on Attorney General Marty Jackley to appoint a special prosecutor for the EB-5 and GEAR UP scandals.

Republican Senator Stace Nelson of Fulton says the resolution would allow for the investigation of some of the alleged corruption coming from Pierre.

Nelson says South Dakotans have made it pretty clear, the last couple of years, "that they're pretty well disgusted with some of the corruption that they've seen coming out of Pierre."

Nelson adds that the EB-5 and GEAR UP scandals “stink to high heaven."

He says a special prosecutor would have jurisdiction over these matters to impartially investigate everything involving them and prosecute any and all persons that were involved.

Nelson adds it’s time to hold someone accountable for this significant corruption.

He says it's been many, many years after the EB-5 corruption and there's millions upon millions of dollars that effectively disappeared into people's pockets and there is still no one that's being held accountable.

The resolution has been sent to the Senate State Affairs Committee. No hearing date has been set yet.
