US Immigration – Basic Requirements

Unlike many other countries in the world, the United States is extremely selective of newcomers. Whether you are applying to immigrate permanently to the US or just for a visa, your chances will be assessed based on personal circumstances and the circumstances of your accompanying family members and/or dependents.

A Green Card holder (permanent resident) is someone who has been granted authorization to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis. As proof of that status, a person is granted a permanent resident card, commonly called a "Green Card." You can become a permanent resident several different ways. Most individuals are sponsored by a family member or employer in the United States. Other individuals may become permanent residents through investment or humanitarian programs.

United States immigration law requires that all immigrant visa applicants receive vaccinations before they may obtain their immigrant visa. Medical examinations must be conducted by panel physicians. All immigrant visa applicants must have their vaccination records available to be reviewed by the panel physician at the time of their medical examination. You may be able to get a copy of your immunization record from your health care provider. If you cannot obtain a copy of your vaccination record, the panel physician may assist you in determining which of the vaccinations you need.
