Project Description

The Baltimore Indigo Hotel - Mt. Venon is a successful renovation of a 198-room dormitory and hospitality teaching hotel, resulting in the creation and operation of an Indigo branded hotel consisting of 162 upscale rooms in a 9-story 119,000 square foot building located in downtown Baltimore, Maryland. The operational Baltimore Indigo Hotel - Mt. Vernon is located in a Designated National Landmark District and a city Cultural District, which is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. The site is near the University of Johns Hopkins, Peabody University, Maryland Baltimore campus, University of Maryland Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Walters’s art gallery, the Baltimore Convention Center, and Inner Harbor sites including restaurants, museums, and aquarium. This upper-scale hotel's amenities include an exercise facility, business center, lounge area, plush bedding, spa-style bathrooms, hard surface flooring, and signature murals to enjoy. The 2-story restaurant and lobby provides an open view for guests to feel at home with its striking décor.

The building was originally built in 1905 as Baltimore’s first YMCA. The building later became the original home of the University of Maryland’s School of Commerce, and in the early 1980’s was converted into 198-room Econo Lodge Hotel. Renovations at that time included new elevators and systems, and the addition of a 3000 square foot kitchen and restaurant. The building was later sold to Baltimore International College, which converted the top four floors into 65 college dorms and utilized the remaining 135 rooms as a training hotel/kitchen and class rooms. In 2011 Baltimore International College ceased operations, but continued to operate as a midscale hotel.

In order to transform the property into a boutique Indigo Hotel, an Intercontinental brand, the entire property has been brilliantly renovated with substantial portions having been rebuilt and reconfigured. The 162 guestrooms and 23 suites offer a variety of choices in the nearby Baltimore Inner Harbor. Guests benefit from exciting room updates that include hardwood floors, custom-designed murals and spa-inspired bathrooms. Guests are surrounded by a combination of historic details and modern improvements, including onsite dining at Poets Modern Cocktails & Eats. Our efforts to preserve and restore the culture and history of one of America's first cities has received widespread support and acclaim.

Project Timeline

Project is construction complete and operating. Has won multiple awards in Baltimore City in less than one year of operation, including the Johns Hopkins Baltimore City Heritage Outstanding Renovation 2016, Baltimore's Best New Bar, while maintaining one of the top average customer satisfaction ratings among Indigo hotels in North America.
